CAF Niche

Reducing poverty and conflict, dissemination and pioneering of influential ideas on how to tackle injustice and inequality.

Contemporary Affairs, a Pan African Foundation- works to reduce poverty and conflict through stimulating and encouraging informed debates, innovative policy alternatives, dissemination and pioneering of influential ideas on how to tackle injustice and inequality.

CA-F does this through engaging its constituents in debates, advocacy, independent issues analysis, community mobilization, capacity building and networking.
CA-F is a platform where ideas meet.

In December 2008, the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YET) and the Open Society Youth Initiative facilitated the participation of 4 Zimbabwean Students at the Pan African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) in Botswana. Innocent Batsani Ncube was appointed Coach of this pioneering debate team. The decision to appoint him Team Coach was influenced by his sustained efforts in initiating and implementing low scale speech and debate programmes since 2000. The 2008 Team A consisting Paul Sixpence (NUST) and Deric Dube(Africa University) went as far as the semi finals and Innocent was part of the Grand Finale adjudication panel.

After the PAUDC Innocent established The Debate School as a multiplier vehicle to bring more young people to learn about the world university style of debate and argumentation & critical engagement theory. 2009 saw the growth of this concept in Zimbabwe through recruiting more students to be part of the Debate School and hosting firstly the Universities Invitational debate with 6 institutions participating and later in October 2009 a fully fledged Zimbabwe National Universities Debate Championship. The Debate School facilitated the participation of excelling debaters in regional championships in South Africa(June University of Witwatersrand) 2nd and 3rd PAUDC( University of Botswana 2009 and University of Namibia 2010)
